Brandow & Johnston was proud to attend the naming and ribbon cutting ceremony for the Alliance Morgan McKinzie High School in East Los Angeles on September 29, 2017. B&J was the Structural Engineer of Record for the high school and the adjacent Alliance College Ready Middle Academy #8 under Berliner Architects, who were the Architect of Record. While the middle school was constructed fairly quickly, the high school posed several challenges. Both buildings were constructed on the site of existing community market spaces. The biggest of these challenges was to preserve the murals by artist Johnny D. Gonzalez that had become such an integral part of the community. Several options were considered, including preserving the entire existing wall and creating a freestanding structure. It was ultimately decided to remove the murals and then integrate them into the exterior façade of the new building.
