The Wilshire Grand Project utilizes Buckling Restrained Braces (BRBs) as outriggers to stiffen the tower and reduce the overturning demands on the core wall. There are upper, middle and lower outriggers of a total of 170 BRB’s on the structure.
BRB’s are composed of a slender steel core, which is also continuously supported by a concrete casing to prevent buckling under axial compression. The core and the casing are decoupled to prevent interaction between them.
The lower outrigger embed plates for the double double BRB’s are currently being erected for the Wilshire Grand Project. Each of these embeds sees 4 – 2,000 kip BRB’s, that’s an astonishing 8,000,000 pounds per connection!

The height of each of the embed plate is over 35 feet. BRBs will be connected to each of these embeds.
